In 1909 the volunteer Surf Bathing Association of NSW was formed with the aim of maintaining and improving safe swimming conditions on all public beaches. In 1922 all State groups joined together to become the Surf Life Saving Association of Australia.
The Manly Lifesaving Club has boasted many Olympic champions including the great Andrew "Boy" Charlton, Harold Hardwick, and Ernest Henry, recent Gold medallist and Australian women's water polo captain, Debbie Watson, Olympic medallists Scott miller, Steve Wood and Alpine Skier Zali Steggel, Current World class swimmer Elka Graham, and Kayaker Shelly Oates.
Amongst the great surf Ironmen champions in recent times include the sports pioneers Craig Riddington and Guy Leech, Corey Hutchings Brett Tyack, Kim Tunnell and Naomi Flood
Manly is also famous for its surfboard riding champions, amongst the surfers to hail from the Manly Area are past world champions Midget Farrelly, Barton Lynch, Tom Carroll, Damien Hardman, Pam Burridge and seven times world female champion - Layne Beachley to name a few.
The first official World Surfing Championship was held on these very shores in 1964 where Local surfer Bernard "Midget" Farrelly took out the inaugural title. Today Midget Steers one of the Local female surfboat crews, which last season narrowly, missed a national medal
