Our hands on surfing instruction method
Surfing is not all about learning how to stand, it is about learning how to catch a breaking wave as it transforms from a swell to a wave. If you can master this – standing up is a mere formality.
Since 1998 – SEA Australia has been the leading provider of surf & water safety programs for schools, the majority of our programs are non-selective, therefore catering for all children – regardless of their abilities.
Lessons and vital knowledge taught in the water or in school, focuses the ‘Float to Survive‘ life skill, combined with basic surf skills and surf education.
Each year SEA Australia conducts programs for over 20,000 school students….at the BEACH!
Our school programs are matched to the NSW School Syllabus. Schools organise with SEA Australia (book a program here!) and we take care of the rest with practical and theory training held in a variety of locations around Sydney & Wollongong.
Our school surf education programs offer a structured introduction to ocean safety and surf skills, starting with a 3-hour introductory program covering floating, foam board basics, and shallow water techniques.
Educators can also opt for a weekly term-based options in our School Sport program that builds on these foundations and lead to higher levels of competence in the water.
For those looking to start participating in school surfing sports, SEA’s Surf Survival Award program provides essential safety training and practical assessments required for ocean readiness.
For our school holiday programs, parents can engage with SEA directly to book in their kids for our Kids Learn to Surf program, or the Surf Survival Award program.
All SEA programs are organised into periods when schools are in term (booked through the schools), or in school holiday periods (where parents can directly book programs with us for their children).
SEA Australia is the founder of the FLOAT to SURVIVE aquatic training methods.
School students and the general population are increasingly lacking swimming and more importantly – floatation skills. These life skills have become less of a priority over the years, which is indicated by the ever-increasing drowning statistics.
Families are at high risk when they visit coastal locations.
Unfortunately, floatation skills are not a mandatory lesson for all Australians to be able to remain safe at the many aquatic environments that are so easily accessible, this is why all school kids should participate in entry level water safety and surf programs such as SEA Australia’s level 1 school program.

Many people have been in a rip but not known it as they find themselves in deeper water and quickly end up on the sandbank with the flow of the rip. Learn more.
This is easier than it looks, and I find it a lot more exhilarating than normal body surfing, however this technique is recommended for experienced body surfers only!
