Community Surf Awareness and Surf Survival
Community Surf Awareness and Surf Survival Programs are now a key focus for SEA considering the recent tragedies on the NSW coastline. SEA has had a long history providing Surf Awareness & Surf Survival Programs to Australian and International school students. Now we aim to bring these courses to the wider community in partnership with local governments.
Surf Educate lecturers and instructors will be providing a series of Surf Safety lectures free of charge over the coming months to members of the community. These presentations have been developed in conjunction with Dr Rob Brander from the University of New South Wales and helps give people an understanding of how the surf works - including:
-
- Beach and coastal geography
- Wave formation
- Types of waves
- Waves and rips - how they work together and how they form our coastlines
- What rip currents are, and how to spot them
- Misconception about rips and inconsistent media campaigns
- Why people are drowning in rips
- What to do if you find yourself in a rip
- Why people ignore warnings
- Supporting videos
